Willington in bloom

Red spider lilies ("Radiata Gloriosa') are in bloom!  These beautiful lilies were first grown in Willington in 1851, when a local doctor, Dr. James Morrow, accompanied Commodore Perry on his voyage to open up trade with Japan and Okinawa, and, at the request of the U.S. government, brought them  and other plants back to the States.

Spider lily bulbs are for sale at the Willington Bookshop at $5.00 for ten bulbs.  They bloom only once a year...the last week of August through the first week of September.
